What I did was removing all updates and Hotfixes:

• Update KB972221
• Hotfix KB973674
• Hotfix KB971091

And then rebooted the computer. After that I found I could change/remove the installed VS2008.

• ASP.NET AJAX UI Templates: Nikhil Kothari from the ASP.NET team has a cool post that shows off a prototype he has been working on that enables clean client-side AJAX templating of UI.
